Since 1999, the counties of Storstrøm and West Zealand, the Land Schleswig-Holstein and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, together with the Swedish-Danish partners of the Øresund region have co-operated within the STRING project (STRING = Southwestern Baltic Sea TransRregional Area – Inventing New Geograghy).

The aim of this long-lasting co-operation is to develop the potential of the partner region and, in the light of the global and rapidly changing economy, work out joint strategies. Therefore, the partners have entered a co-operation agreement with a view to the vision including an integrated, permanently competitive region with a quality of life based on the three pillars: innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainability.

STRING: Transregionalgebiet Südwestliche Ostsee → Neue Geographie Umsetzen

Die politische Vision der STRING-Kooperation ist die Entwicklung einer leistungsfähigen europäischen Region, die unter dem Leitgedanken dreier zusammenhängender Werte steht: Nachhaltigkeit, Unternehmertum und Innovation stellen die Grundsäulen für Lebensqualität dar. Regionalpolitiker aus der STRING-Region (Öresund Region, West Zealand, Storstrøm, Schleswig-Holstein und Hamburg) haben dazu eine strategische Zusammenarbeit mit Langzeitperspektive eingeleitet, die 1999 mit dem gemeinsamen INTERREG IIC-Projekt STRING ihren Anfang nahm. Umfangreiche Kommunikation und Austausch zwischen Experten in den Bereichen Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft, Politik u.a.m. erlaubte die Analyse von Potentialen und Hürden, die Identifizierung von Feldern der Zusammenarbeit und die Entwicklung konkreter Projekte sowie weiterer politischer, technischer und gesetzgeberischer Aktivitäten.

Description:

Main Objective is to improve the network of pleasure boat harbours in the Baltic Sea Region. Boat tourism offers regional economic development opportunities, not least in small communities having lost traditional harbour functions (fishery, commercial port), but requires a network approach across borders.

The goals of this INTERREG II C project were to prepare framework plans for an improved physical network of marinas as an integral part of both the natural environment and urban/regional infrastructures as well as for the improvement of individual harbours as part of urban structures. Moreover, the exchange of experience within the field of harbour planning was to be enforced.

Das Ziel dieses INTERREG II C Projektes war die Entwicklung von Rahmenplänen einerseits für ein verbessertes Netz von Sportboothäfen, welches in die Umwelt-, Stadt- und Regionalentwicklung integriert ist und andererseits für die Verbesserung einzelner Häfen. Darüberhinaus sollte der Erfahrungsaustausch gefördert werden.

Description:

This interdisciplinary project examined the deconstruction of coastal protection devices as a means of renaturation in an area prone to frequent flooding. It aimed at deriving models for land use systems, which take into consideration both economical as well as ecological aspects.

Möglichkeiten der Integration von Landnutzung, Naturschutz und Küstenschutz in Überschwemmungsbereichen der Ostseeküste

In einem interdisziplinär angelegten Projektrahmen wurden Renaturierungsmaßnahmen in Form von Rückbauten von Küstenschutzanlagen an der Ostsee, die mit zeitweiligen Flächenüberschwemmungen einhergehen, untersucht. Ziel war die Ableitung modellhafter Landnutzungssysteme in renaturierten Überschwemmungsbereichen, die sowohl ökonomische Belange der Bewirtschafter als auch naturschutzfachliche Anforderungen berücksichtigen.

Description:

The project is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in 3 phases. With the close of the first project phase from 2004 to 2007 the basis for a regional ICZM implementation has been provided in particular in the German part of the region. Now, this basis has to be developed further, focused thematically and having a cross-border ICZM in mind, into concrete and transferable recommendations for the regional, national and international ICZM levels. Additional and significant new research is needed because of multiple changes in ecological, social, planning and legal frameworks, changes in the border situation and other complex and large-scale changes with immediate impacts on the coastal zone. Project results show that the Oder River with its drainage basin has a central steering function on the coastal zone. A regional ICZM must not neglect effects like this. Moreover, it was shown, that the innovative interlinking of river-coast-sea simulation models combined with transdisciplinary work allow scientificly highly relevant analysis and scenarios of past, present and future states of this coastal region.

The follow-up project considers this research state. Aiming at a stronger focus, the planned tasks in the follow-up project can be thematically summarised as followed:
