Aquaculture Europe 2010

Title: Aquaculture Europe 2010
Location: Porto, PORTUGAL

Date: 2010-10-05

Description:

Following on from the highly successful Aquaculture Europe 2002 conference “SeafarmingToday and Tomorrow” held in Trieste, Aquaculture Europe 2010 will bring back the focus on the future of marine aquaculture in Europe. As in 2002, the conference comes at a time when the European Commission has published its Communication on the strategy for the development of European aquaculture.

Although global aquaculture production shows annual increases of 5-10%, production growth in Europe is considerably lower. The challenge is to demonstrate sustainable development, while producing products that are competitive with those originating from other regions in the global market. Novel technology, but also new areas for production will need to be realized -making use of the great potentials of Europe as an advanced aquaculture production environment and as a leading consumer market.

As its theme suggests, the AE2010 conference will address many topics related to island, coastal and ocean aquaculture, but it will also cover the production of freshwater species. Parallel conference sessions include land-based systems, estuarine, coastal lagoon, coastal and offshore aquaculture and encompass many species from shellfish to fish to marine plants. AE2010 will also consider the specific issues related to production on Mediterranean islands and in Europe‟s Outermost Regions.

A trade exhibition, farmers’ day, the EAS General Assembly and other events will complete the AE2010 event.

The Dutch research programmes Climate changes Spatial Planning and Knowledge for Climate, the City of Rotterdam and the Co-operative Programme on Water and Climate invite you to share your experience and knowledge with other scientists, politicians, policymakers and practitioners by participating in the conference.

Two days of the conference will be dedicated to science, one day to policy issues and international cooperation between Delta institutions. The conference pursues three main goals:

  1. exchange of up-to-date top science on climate change and delta planning
  2. strengthening of international cooperation between deltas and delta cities
  3. exploring and strengthening the links between science, policy and practitioners at international level

Themes to be discussed include: subsidence, sea level rise, climate change and spatial planning, flood risk management, salt water intrusion, urban heat island effect, governance and innovative policy instruments for planning and decision making. The call for papers will be sent out in October.

Description:

Across the world coasts are dynamic and ever-changing. In recent years an improved understanding of natural processes has generated new concepts in the management of coastal landforms, water bodies and ecosystems. But we must not overlook social and economic changes, which are just as important in providing the context for sustainable management. Indeed ‘global change’ is as much about the globalisation of the economy and society as it is about global environmental change.

The aim of the conference is to develop a holistic view of the priorities for integrated management across the social, political, economic and environmental divides that uniquely characterise the coast.

The themes of the conference reflect the three aspects of global change:

THEME 1: Global change and managing environmental risk;
THEME 2: Developing the marine and coastal economy,
THEME 3: Tackling inequality in coastal communities.

Each theme will be examined from the perspectives of leadership, innovation and investment. This framework provides the basis for an analysis of coastal regions and their management and a means of addressing critical questions concerning:

  • Which are the barriers to improved management of coasts and nearshore marine systems?
  • Where are the knowledge gaps and how can we improve management?
  • What are the priorities?
  • Do lessons learned identify good practices that can be widely applied, and what are the respective roles and responsibilities of the many different actors?
  • What are the gains to be achieved through the integrated, holistic approach promoted by the concept of integrated coastal zone management?

These are important questions. Our coasts are important assets that have suffered from poor management in the past. Not only do we still struggle to make more integrated policy, but we also have to work within a legacy of past mistakes . Such is the pace of change in the world today that we need new perspectives, new tools and new policies now. The consequences of failure are increased risk, increased cultural and economic loss, and continued loss of biodiversity.

Deadline for submission of abstracts: 21st December, 2009.
